The Three Types of Code

Every time I start a new project, I organize the code I’m looking at into three types, or categories if you like. And I think these types can be applied to any codebase, any language, any technology or open source project. Whether I’m writing HTML or CSS or building a React component, thinking about these different categories has helped me figure out what to refactor and prioritize, and what to leave alone for now.

The Order of CSS Classes in HTML Doesn’t Matter

That’s right! And I can prove it, too. Let’s look at some CSS first:

.a {
  color: red;
}

.b {
  color: blue;
}

And now let’s look at some markup:

<div class="a b">Here’s some text</div>

The text is going to be blue because .b is defined last in the CSS, right? But what if we go about and switch the order in which those classes are called in HTML:

<div class="b a">Here’s some text</div>

Masking GIFs with other GIFs

The other day, Cassie Evans tweeted a really neat trick that I’ve never seen before: using SVG to mask one GIF on top of another. The effect is quite lovely, especially if you happen to grab a colorful GIF and place it on top of a monochrome one:
