in old versions of HTML was target=”_blank”
in XHTML in order to validate people were using .JS to open links in new tab (window)

is it okay use it in HTML5?

Yes, in HTML5 you can use the target attribute. See also: http://www.w3.org/TR/2011/WD-html5-20110525/text-level-semantics.html#the-a-element

    I’d rather use rel=”external”

    google

And have javascript open a new window on click. That way you could change your mind later and disable that “functionality” without any trouble.

@Paulie_D w3schools have a lot of incorrect information and are in no way related to w3c. Their diplomas are worth nothing too. Check out w3fools.
