Floats or position for layouts

Hi all.
Kinda new to webdesign and in the middle of learning CSS.
Im curious what techniques you guys prefer when it comes to creating the layout of your page.
As I understand it you can use floats and margins but also position:relative/absolute.
What are the pros and cons of each technique?

I generally use floats for layout – The design might require positions though, it just depends on the design.
