I’ve been struggling with this for ages, and have tried all the usual bugfixing techniques, but the behaviour of the margins on these documents is seemingly too erratic to be traced back to a single cause. Short of trying some Dale Cooper-esque Tibetan-inspired divination I’ve got no idea what else to do.

I’ll thus be forever in the debt of anyone who can figure out why the margins between paragraphs appear so large on this text:

    https://endnotes.org.uk/other_texts/en/asja-crise-republique-absurd

… but not on this one:

    https://endnotes.org.uk/other_texts/en/il-lato-cattivo-the-kurdish-question

    Thanks in advance!

I solved it myself in the end, and it turned out not to be a CSS problem at all—which explains the nonsensical results when attempting to debug this.

The problem was simply that some UTF8 paragraph separators (U+2029) had got into the text. Unlike simple whitespace, these are actually rendered by browsers, thus adding erroneous extra paragraph breaks.
