I’ve been noticing this trend a lot, but I’m not sure how to describe it. It’s usually fixed position photographic backgrounds that change as you scroll vertically. Sort of like layers that overlap as you scroll. Here are a few examples:

I’m mostly a front end designer, so I’m looking for code or a tutorial or any info that would help me achieve this effect.
thanks
@jenrizzo It’s called “Parallax” or “Parallax Scrolling”.
@Jenrizzo, the trend was kicked off by the Nike Better World site. A good overall analysis of this effect can be seen via http://coding.smashingmagazine.com/2011/07/12/behind-the-scenes-of-nike-better-world/ and in addition, there’s a handy jQuery plugin called jparallax (http://webdev.stephband.info/parallax.html) which makes reproducing a similar effect a doddle!
