Backgound 50% alpha – text 100%?

I am trying to crete a transparent back-ground, but would like the text to have a 100% alpha. I can create transparencies all over the place – but I don’t want everything within the div tag to be transparent, just the back-ground…

Here is a link where I got frustrated trying to create what I needed, finally just used images for the bg – but it was tricky and seems like there must be an easier/better way…
