Applications
For the Mac, there is a menu bar application (created with Fluid.app, idea and special layout thanks to Jay Salvat). For Windows, there is a small application as well, that minimizes to your System Tray (thanks to Andrew Turner).
New Features
For the Mac, there are links you can reveal to add the snippets to both TextMate (thanks to Mikkel Malmberg) and Coda (thanks to Toby Pitman). For Linux, there is a link to download a file to add the snippets to GEdit (thanks to Stuart Langridge).New snippets have been added like a basic empty table structure, definition list, and a basic unordered list navigation.
Bummer
Originally I had functionality in there that when you clicked on any of the code it would automatically copy it to the clipboard for you. This made use some of some fancy integration with Flash to get it done. Unfortunately, with Flash 10, this no longer works and there is no work-around in site. It has been removed for now.
Update
September 20th, 2010: HTML-Ipsum is still kicking, but it’s been simplified and much of this fancy stuff is gone. You can click-to-copy again though, which is real handy!
You should add some kind of button or something that would make it easier for people to copy the stuff they need.
Keep up the good work!
great work, thank you very much!
I always use Zend Studio to code my stuff, and for ‘lorem’ text, i just made a template..
but this is much easier!
also thanks for the windows app (also my thanks to Andrew Turner!)
No problems, I was after one myself, so thus it was born! :)
I’ve added the textmate bundle – will have to see if I can get into the habit of using it.
sorry i forgot this:
isnt it possible to add the option that when you click on one of the textes, it automatically selects the whole text… that would make copy&pasting a bit easier, because you wont need to select it first and then copy&past, but you just click on it…
Thank you ( btw: sorry for the two comments)
You are so generous!
Thank you!
very handy tool …
Thanks for this! It’s a real time saver
There are a few issues with the Coda clips however:
1) The title is wrong in the Table and Unordered List Navigation
2) The spacing and indentation is all messed up. We all want readable markup don’t we ? :)
1) Fixed.
2) You’ll have to go into your clips and manually clean them up a little to be formatted how you want them to be. There is no good way to get line breaks in the coda clips from an HTML link.
You should stick in some javascript code to do a select all whenever someone clicks on the text in each of the boxes.
I had that in there at one point but found it weird and inconsistent across browsers. For example, in Safari you would click and it would “flash” all the text as selected and then unselect it. So it would be rather frustrating when clicking in the first time to select text.
If I can figure out a way to do it that isn’t frustrating, I’ll add it.
I assume we’re talking about something like this, right?
window.clipboardData.setData('Text',document.getElementById('DivWithCode').innerHTML);
I’m not entirely sure if that’s the best way, but it does seem to work, and avoids the flickering issues (in my tests: Opera, Konquerer, Firefox, Midori).
Further testing shows that not only does it not flicker, it doesn’t copy shit to the clipboard. It would seem that I fail at testing.
XULPlanet seems to have something that might work similarly in Mozilla.
That is why people use flash to copy text to the clip board..
It’s a shame the clipboard thing doesn’t work anymore. I always used that.
Good to see some new stuff though. =]
it’ll be nice to see some kind of tag cloud with random words on html-ipsum
I
m not sure how to get the icon in my menu bar. Figured it would show up after i installed but it hasn’t. not sure what I’m doing wrong.
You could probably try the Zero Clipboard script, which is fully compatible with Flash Player 10.
That one click feature you had before worked great for me. Any chance you can have it as an option so those who can use it, can (at their own risk).
:D
Thanks for all the great resources, this one is no exception. And the Coda links are brilliant
Super! Even has Coda clips! You’ve done everything but make the layout for me! … Wait, I’m sure somewhere on the site you’ve made layouts too. Great resources!
Kuler app maybe? :)
Is it possible to get snippets for notepad++ like you’ve got set up for coda?
Thanks for the mention Chris! Glad I could help. :)
unfortunately the windows version is pretty slow, so i think i’ll keep using the online version.
i loved the idea of HTMLipsum! Thanks Coyier.
I love HTML-Ipsum is saves me so much time!
Have you ever conciderd making av Cliptext library for EditPlus text editor(for example)?
Im sure it will help a lop of developers.
I’ve never even heard of that editor, but if you want to make the library for it, I’d be glad to add it to the site.
Hope this isn’t a stupid question, but any chance that the actual HTML-Ipsum text could randomly change every time you visited the site? The specific HTML tags and length of each snippet would stay the same, of course.
I love using HTML-Ipsum to populate test blog posts, but it kinda defeats the purpose of Ipsum text if it’s always the same every time you copy and paste it. Most Lore-Ipsum apps do a good job of randomizing the text every time you use it! would be great if HTML-Ipsum did it as well…!
