Is it even safe to clone a repo from github onto a live server?

I’ll readily admit that I’ve been configuring servers for about 3 days and I’m a little paranoid at this point. But… I wonder if the whole local machine >> github >> live server is the best and most secure workflow. I mean… I guess it’s all run off of SSH keys but still. Seems a little suspect and I can’t put my finger on why.
