    I usually stumble upon little things on websites which honestly drive me crazy and it bewilders me that sometimes I notice them on big, high traffic websites.

    One of the most soul crushing things as of now for me is; image sliders that essentially reload (not necessarily, but I’m sure you know what I mean, url modifying is perhaps a better way to describe it) the page to change the image, I notice this on quite big ecommerce websites when i’m viewing product rotations and then when I want to go back to the product listings I have to hit the back button in the browser an excessive amount of times to backtrack through all the image rotations.

    If there’s a feedback section available I’ll always point out things like this regardless to whether I expect them to actually read it or not, just to be helpful.

    Is there anything that you see on websites nowadays that drives you crazy?

    Sites that hijack my scrolling and/or implement a custom scrollbar.

    Crazy’s a big word but I find it annoying when a site is based on JS and there is no fallback resulting in showing a blank page or an endless loading spinner when scripting is disabled.

    With my own web behaviour, it happens all the time because I’m using the NoScript add-on with Firefox. I know that’s a choice on my side but it’s a small thing to make a website in a way where it accounts for that (a basic notice that disabled JavaScript has been detected would be enough). Last time I checked, about 5% of the surfing crowd is ignored like this.

    I usually end up turning it on (temporarily) anyway but definitely not all the FB tracking and what not…

    Which brings us to the next annoyance – sites with a humongous amount of ‘useless’ additional scripts.

    Carousels in general are hard for me. My work uses an old Windows 2000 server install that we remote desktop into. The hardware is pretty old (we still use cassettes to back up our data), so browser repaints are slow. It’ll take a good 10-20 seconds for a page with images to load, and if there’s a carousel that changes image within that time I just can’t do a lot with that page.

    Niche problem, but it does have an impact.

    Thanks for the link, Beverleyh. Interesting read, I guess the percentage is quite a bit lower than I mentioned (I recalled that number from a Statcounter account that had been active for a while). Still, the basis (a noscript tag) is usually a minor fix and taking unscripted browsers into account kinda shows consciousness on the designer’s side. It’s mostly the infinite spinners that show a lack thereof.

    Yup, I’m sure I’m nitpicking here. B-)

    I cleaned up my blog a bit and removed some Facebook c***. The page loads so much faster now. Kinda makes me think – what was I thinking back then?

    No doubt the intention was good, @Ilan Firsov. But that’s what the evil empires rely on (lol).

    Nice one. The huge blocking pop up there’s pretty horrible! Haha. Sites where a similar major cookie agreement blocks everything is usually a back button trigger for me as well.
