I had a great idea for a code editing application. Don’t want to give all the details, but I’d LOVE to make an editor from scratch and not use something like Ace. I’m a rebel, plus I’d love to learn. I also love to make things from scratch.
Are there any tutorials on how to make a code editor with syntax highlighting and tabbing with HTML+CSS+JS from the ground up?

There’s no real secret my man. It’s HTML + CSS + JS + Some back-end language + database for data persistence like everything else.
I’d just like to throw out that this is a HUGE undertaking. Ask @chriscoyier what went into building CodePen. I’m sure it was super difficult. But… that doesn’t mean you SHOULDN’T do it. Just that you should count the cost.
I saw some folks in Design Den messing around with Code Editor UI a few weeks ago. Maybe look there for some pointers. Then… the real work begins.

We use http://codemirror.net/
November 4, 2014 at 3:29 pm #187710nixnerdParticipantWow. Didn’t see that coming. I guess you learn something new everyday! I would strongly suggest you take a look at the Codepen source. IMHO, it’s the best web-based code editing experience out there. Period.
November 7, 2014 at 1:15 am #187851RickyYoderParticipantThanks everybody. But like I said, I kind of am a rebel, and I’m really interested in learning my own way for things, to enlighten myself and better myself.
Now I did take a look at the source code for Ace, and it seems a lot more complex than what I have started.I’m having an issue with the syntax highlighting/cursor, however, and I made a separate topic on it.
Here’s the editor so far…a bit buggy but you can type in some HTML.
