WordPress Help: query category of latest-published post

Hello, please help me. I’m currently building a theme for my own wordpress blog. The theme is based upon another one i found on the web. The theme consists of 6 columns which are likewise 6 categories.

the code for a column(category) looks like this.

every column has the class of "latest" (<ul class="latest">)…
Is it possible to query the category which contains the latest-published post?

i want to give the category which contains the latest-published post an additional id of "latestpost". Is that even possible?
