jQuery is a library that have a lot of usefull function and helps you to start use JS without thinking about browser compatibilities. You can write simple programs but without proper understanding JS you never write something really cool.
I have started to learn JS and jQuery in parallel and have hope that using jQuery gives me push to proper understanding JS
