Newer, older links randomness

OK, this one is a genuine problem.
The older and newer links that one would expect to appear at the bottom of the blogroll (if I’m using the term correctly) seem to appear or not with a will of their own.

Sometimes they are there, sometimes not.

This occurs on the default theme as well as the one I’ve created.
Am I missing something about their nature/function?
I had imagined that they allow one to navigate between archives.

I have a suspicion there’s something odd about the way the posts have been entered.
My friend, who’s blog this is, retrofitted her posts from a previous one.

when the latest entries are displayed, only the "older entries" link is relevant (you are on the latest page, why would you link to even newer posts when there arent any?)
and when you are the end of the list (the last page with the oldest posts) you can move only foward, thus "newer entries" gets displayed. :)
