How do you determine what a particular JS file does?

Hello, I use firebug in firefox to view site codes, and I was wondering how you determine what each javascript file (or jquery for that matter) does on the website. I know how to find it in the of the page document, but what is then the best way to learn what that particular script does?

    Thanks.
