People have been kicking that ol’ chestnut around for years.
Do the youngsters have no idea what it is?, we ask. What happens when all the things we based our icons on don’t exist anymore?, we wonder. Do we need a new one?, and we experiment.
Olivia Walch’s skewering is hilarious:

Baby bear: Make a button and put the word save in it.
This is actually worth an article in itself. Icons on command buttons can be bad UX when your target audience is very broad.
Even more — people no longer need to have the concept of “save:” whatever you write (or take a picture of, etc.) is still there when you come back later. You can throw things out, or organize them, but “saving” is less-and-less of a concept. So it is more like working with paper than it used to be.
True especially on iOS devices, as far as I know. And pretty annoying when you just deleted something by mistake!

Fools !
Now every modern UI is not using that ugly floppy disk icon.
Hint if you think the floppy disk icon is still the best: ask your children. Invariably it will end up with “papa (or mummy) is crazy” written all over their face. They don’t know about floppies, they barely know about discs.
Icons and words. How many times have I stumbled around looking for … and its an icon that didn’t mean a thing to me.
A lot can be forgiven when sites have good footer menus. :-)
Above the fold clean look using just icons.
Using the icon with associated word in the footer provides for usability.
