As of late yesterday here are the results:
I wasn’t surprised to see the Meyer’s reset in the lead. It is very popular, thoughtful, and effective. I was surprised to “What’s a CSS Reset?” at a narrow second place. In a nutshell, a CSS reset removes default styling from page elements so that you are “starting fresh” with the attributes you choose to apply. This is important for two reasons. One, puts all browsers on a level playing field. Different browsers apply different default styling to elements, so if you are looking to have your website look the same in all the different browsers (you are), a CSS reset is important. Two, it allows you to “think forwards” as far as applying attributes like margin and padding to page elements. Instead of having to “think backwords” in removing attributes from elements, you can only apply them to elements you know need them.
If you want to learn more about the CSS resets, Perishable Press has a pretty nice round up a lot of different ones. I’m going to leave the poll up for a few more days in case anyone else wants to weight in. Those of you that voted “custom”, care to share? For the next poll, I’m gonna try and figure out a way to get voting right inside the post so maybe it’ll work through the feed. We’ll see…
Nothing odd for me, Meyer’s reset stylesheet’s been a life saver. Just to think that you don’t have to worry about all those differences in different browsers makes your job almost halfway done ;).
Great to see the results of this poll. I am not surprised at all that the Meyer reset is the most favored/widely used. Eric spends an incredible amount of time (considering his line of work) fine-tuning his CSS reset styles. In fact, his reset now has it’s own page:
http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/css/reset/
Rather than try to keep up with his many posts on the subject, just bookmark that page and you will always have the most up-to-date version. Thanks for the poll, looking forward to more!
Huh. I actually didn’t expect that at all; I figured the framework resets would win by a country mile. Now the pressure’s totally on! Arrrrgh!
I have every only used the ‘hard reset’ as its less code etc but i am going to have to use the Myers reset one of these days just to experience the ‘other’ side.
I have just always used
* { margin: 0; padding: 0; }
guess i’ll have to try the Eric Meyer reset
(over two years later)
That’s all I still use. But I think resets are invaluable when designing for a large site with tons of content where you aren’t intimately familiar with each and every page.
I had never used the Meyerweb reset, but I stumbled upon it while searching for a way to reset margins that didn’t want to reset on Safari… Thanks, great site!
