“Solving Common Client Requests with jQuery”
That is my chosen topic. Since I think I’ll be speaking to a room of folks 75% of which are going to be smarter than me, I thought I would take more of a real-world approach rather than straight instructional. We’ll be taking a look at some actual sites I’ve worked on and how I leaned on jQuery to help me accomplish something that would have been difficult or impossible otherwise.

I have one free ticket to give away to a CSS-Tricks reader. I always struggle with this because I don’t like “leave a comment to win” contests and I also dislike Facebook/Twitter related contests. So we are going to try something new here.
To enter to win the free ticket: you must donate $10 to ANY open source project. Then forward your receipt to me at [email protected] and you’ll be entered to win.
If you win, you get a $199 ticket for $10. If you lose, you get the intense satisfaction that you helped an deserving open source project. If you aren’t comfortable with that, don’t enter. Transportation and lodging is up to you.
Also remember it’s ANY open source project. Could be jQuery (or some plugin), could be WordPress (or some plugin), or literally ANY other open source project that accepts donations.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to get to Mountain View, CA any time soon, but the entry format is awesome. Great idea to have people donate to open source projects – they need all the support they can get.
Yeah, I agree. I often see people pick winners by require them to comment their posts but I think it’s not useful to the community itself. This idea is much greater.

Is this legal? I don’t think you can call it a contest if you’re requiring people to spend money. Maybe a lottery. Who’s overseeing how you decide a winner? Rules etc? There are state laws covering stuff like this.
If I get in legal trouble for giving away a free ticket by asking people to support free software while not profiting myself, then I get in legal trouble. I have absolutely no idea why this would be a problem. I’m deciding who wins by pseudo-random number generation against all people who forward me an entry.
Hotel and flights included? ;) lol

I think this is a great idea, supporting the open source community with such a contest. Congrats and good luck at the conference.
I just love the description they give of you, “Chris Coyier is a web craftsman, blogger, author, and occasional speaker. His overall philosophy on working with the web is “instant productivity,” in other words, leaning on the tools you know best to get the job done. Sure, he could learn how to do that AJAX request in raw JavaScript, or he could write it in jQuery and be home in time for dinner. And he likes dinner.”. :P

A shame i live in the Netherlands otherwise I would try to win this “contest”. But the 199 dollar ticket isn’t really the problem :P..
Maybe I will just donate for the fun and joy of giving to the community.. I think we owe a lot to these men ehm and women?? ;)
And for the people who are donating.. don’t think only about the UGE open source projects like jquery or WordPress.. there are also a lot of small projects who deserve your gift (sinatra ruby or couchDB for example)
