Well… for someone whose never used WordPress and is also a novice, this may be a bit to bite off. I certainly think WP can handle doing what they need. I’ve personally never used WordPress MU, but it appears to do what you want it to.
If you do this, you’ll probably be a novice no longer, but because of that make sure you take whatever estimate you make for time, and triple it.
