WordPress NavButtons not friendly with IE

I am new to design in WordPress and am trying to set up a really basic nav bar – nothing fancy. Fact, everything seemed to go fairly well, but Internet Explorer is not having it. It is forcing my

section (liked to a custom Nav bar that links to my pages in the Admin section) to look like an ordinary list. I am running IE9.
