Im looking to create a gallery section for a client in a wordpress site.
The gallery will need to be able to be split into albums, and each photo will need its own URL so that users can share (via facebook, tweet this, etc.).
Just wondering if anyone has suggestions on what out there is the best for my needs. Importance for this is the ease of usability on the back end, as well as the flexibility to “skin” the front end.
So far the research i have done have lead me to nextgen-gallery as the best option out there right now:

Any Advice would be much appreciated.
Nextgen Gallery is an amazing plugin for image galleries management and front-end displays. It does give a unique URL to each image.
The only problem I found with the plugin is that there appears to be no easy way to hyperlink thumbnails (displayed through the plugin’s random image widget) to the image page. The default behaviour is hyperlink to a lightbox. Till now I’ve been unable to do the customization.
daredanger…can i see an example of the site you are using the plugin on?
@JoshWhite…. sorry i cud not follow your question?…..can u clarify a bit?
I can’t say exactly how to do it. But I think for carousel view you can achieve your objective by just altering css. For gallery view I think you’ll have to do some editing in javascript as well and so I think it’ll be more challenging.
