I currently have a food blog using the free wordpress.com platform (avocadopesto.wordpress.com) which doesn’t allow me to add plugins or advertise. I would like to upgrade to wordpress.org so I can do these things. How would I go about doing that? I would like to use host gator. Would I set up an account and purchase my domain there and then export/import all my current blog posts? When viewers would type avocadopesto.wordpress.com would they automatically be forwarded to the new avocadopesto.com site? Also how would this work for old blog posts that they had saved – such as this http://avocadopesto.wordpress.com/2012/03/27/daring-bakers-march-2012-dutch-crunch-bread-and-prosciutto-sandwiches/ — would that link now take them to the appropriate post in the new site, or would that connection be lost? Please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I’ve never done a migration from the .com to .org, but I’m sure they have some steps that you can take.

“If you would like to redirect the old URLs at yourblogname.wordpress.com to new URLs at yourblogname.com, WordPress.com does this for a fee of $12/year.”

Host Gator would be fine. You’ll need hosting that allows you to have MySQL databases, which should be included in their base account.
