When establishing child and parent pages in WP is there some form of good practise that should be adhered to? For instance, I have set all the pages within a drop-down to be children of the drop-down heading, but would the same rationale apply to pages that offshoot from the home page but are not directly related to it? Do these pages need to children of the home page or have no parent at all?

Pages don’t necessarily need to have a parent. Think of pages that you might link to from a footer or utility nav, they certainly wouldn’t be under the ‘Home’ umbrella.
