ParticipantHey,
I’ve spent some time searching through Google trying to find out the best way about doing this and read a few threads within this forum which seem to be more aimed at freelancers. However I’m not sure if this is relevant.
Basically a friend from University and I wish to start a web design company whilst we’re both in full time roles. We’d just be working on small projects in our spare time and hopefully one day have enough clients to do it full time.
In starting up what is the best way to approach this? I’ve read about a limited company or something like a partnership is the easiest way to get stuck into it? Would these come with VAT registered or is that separate all together?
Any advice is welcomed, as I don’t have a clue which is the best way to go ahead.
Kind Regards,

From some of the terms you have used I’m assuming you’re in the UK.
However, this general advice applies pretty much everywhere.
Consult professionals..by which I mean accountants and lawyers about the best way too set up your enterprise. A small investment in proper legal, professional advice can save you a lot of money in the the future.
They can help you draw up Employee Contracts, Customer Contracts and more.
Get professional help early and stay professional after.
It’s not a comfortable thought but you have to consider what might happen if you and co-founders decide to go different ways or even have a disagreement about something business related.
Who gets to make decisions, about what, who has the ultimate decision.
If the worst happens, who gets what, who decides how much, what about shared assets (especially IP assets, royalties etc.)?
The days of a two-man team starting up in a basement garage somewhere and just winging it are pretty much over.
Do you think Gates, Jobs and the Google guys didn’t have lawyers as soon as possble?
If you don’t, you run the ‘Zuckerberg’ risk.
