using :hover to make img appear above another img with css3

Hi, i need to make an effect on a gallery, the idea is to make an inner shadow on a thumbnail when somebody hovers over that image, using one png “mask” to save some space, but i cound’t find any way to do that. So i was wondering if there is a way of doing it with css3.
