I do not know how to make a Transparent Shape appear over a Menu item on Hover.

I would like to hover over a Menu (on the horizontal, top, primary, main menu) and have a gradient, transparent shape descend from the very top and cover the Menu Item that is on hover. If it can not descend, it can simply Appear (become visible).

The shape should be a Trapezoid or a parallelogram. It does not have to be a gradient but that would be ideal.

Should I make a Transparent Div and then make it Appear on hover?
    Or
Can I make a Div with a shape?

It is most important that this shape should follow the menu item when the browser window resizes to any size! This responsive part is the tougher part to imagine.

    Any ideas?

When I say Transparent, I mean partially, say 30-50%, so the shape is a highlight over the menu item.
