[SOLVED] To prefix or not to prefix

So this question has been bugging me for some time. I feel kinda dumb asking it, but I have never heard an answer.

I often hear developers say you no longer have to use a vendor prefix with, say for example, box-shadow. But I’m curious how is it at some point a vendor prefix is no longer needed? Those browsers that needed the prefix didn’t suddenly no longer need it correct? So what is it that determines the prefix is no longer needed for a property?

Whether or not you want to continue supporting the browser that needs that prefix.
