I have some text in a Photoshop mockup that looks really plain. What kind of glow/effect can I apply to it that will make it look good, but not cheap?

It’s just regular text, the starting of a logo: black on white. Why do you need a picture of that? If you absolutely have to, I guess I’ll do it when I get home.
You said it was text that LOOKED plain. If I could see the text, I could tell you what would look good or not. Anyway, you can add many things. Shadow, Stroke, 3D effects.
Here is my header on my site that uses shadow, 2 colors and a background color fade for my location.

Bevel and Emboss is another good one, just rasterize the text and apply Layer Styles
