It sounds good in writing to have users follow this forum’s etiquette but from what we’ve seen it hasn’t seemed to work here, unfortunately. There are links in the sidebar and below the textarea. There even used to be a sticky post showing how to ask a question in the forum which was created by another forum user (no longer sticky). Many people, especially newcomers, still ignore these resources that is or was given to them for their own benefit. Some just refuse to do any research at all. And there have been occasions where individuals have bluntly asked us to give them the code or blow us off entirely when we ask what they’ve tried so far. I assume this is why @paulie_d posts links from the service, Let Me Google That For You. This is the reason I have suggested to have a duplicate posting feature. We are here to help but not do the work for them. I believe that once people see posts marked as duplicate it will be obvious that they have to put forth some effort. I understand that we, as a community, like to have discourse within posts and that’s great however, that doesn’t mean we can’t also have a feature to point others to another post if it is inline with or answers their question.

Yes…it’s mostly through frustration with particularly bad questions when I use LMGTFY because a simple Google search would have brought up a myriad of similar questions / answers.

I’m not sure there’s a way to ‘force’ users to provide good questions (SO sure can’t)..other than simply to not help them until they improve the question / provide the information.

I don’t think that’s a road we want to travel too far. Continuing to ask for proper information is, it seems to me, is the only practical way forward.

    If they don’t respond…ignore them.

It might be an option for Mods to “Close” threads more aggressively but that’s really a nuclear option that I generally leave for threads that have either (1) completely lost the plot … or (2) are necro-posted and any continuing discussion would be better suited to a new thread entirely.

It’s not something I do often and I always give it great thought before doing so…plus it can always be undone if necessary.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting to force users into anything, at least I’m certainly not, nor am I suggesting to have this forum run similar to Stack Overflow. What I’m suggesting is to use a feature that will require effort on the user’s part.

Except we don’t need moderators to assume control over something that users can accomplish with an algorithmic approach.

That sounds a lot like ‘force’ to me…but I wasn’t suggesting that force (as such) be used…just saying that you can’t.

Right and I completely understood that. I was just declaring it wasn’t even an option brought forward by other people or myself.

    I’ll just leave this here.

I think posting the following request here is not completely inappropriate – if possible, please make it so that triple ticks don’t get reverted to single when a post is edited. Or that it gets a mind of it’s own and decides where to place new single ticks.

    Thanks in advance. :-)
