How can we optimize or increase the speed of a MySQL select query?

More of a MySQL question than a PHP question. Your schema, indexing, and how you construct your queries will all affect execution time. On the PHP side, you should aim for as few “trips” to the database as possible, especially if the DB is on a different server.

Beyond that, you’d need to ask a specific question to get any useful answers.

sleep comes to mind. Or just write an infinite loop.

In seriousness, though, you’d need to ask a question in order to get an answer. If you want a general overview of the subject, you should go find a blog or programming book.
