Parallax scrolling with bg-img pause

Hi,
I’m trying to work out a way to temporarily fix/pause the movement of my background images ala Ian Coyle’s website – http://editsquarterly.com/

I want the bg-imgs to appear static until the user scrolls to a particular point, at which time they animate as per the parallax scrolling (see the codepen example below).

I’m new to js and am using the relatively simple parallax design by Ian Lunn. I’m a bit hesitant about trawling through Ian Coyle’s code cause it looks a fair bit more dense.

Any suggestions?
