Need only one scroll bar.

Hi guys,
I need only one scroll bar along y-axis, when the content overflows along the x-axis i want it to continue in the next line instead of having a scroll bar along the x-axis. Also i want the scroll bar along the y-axis only when the content overflows rather than always being displayed. The content here i am talking about is pre formatted text… does that mean that the scrollbar is inevitable??
I am using
overflow-y:auto;
but i am not getting the required functionality. Please help.
