I have CS5 Extended. Love it.

You can also give it a try using the 30 day free trial.

@Paulie_D – I don’t want this to turn into a Photoshop vs Illy vs FW thread. So, we’ll just that it is purely personal preference.

    I, for example, prefer PS.

If you can’t afford Photoshop, there really are a bunch of online photo editors.

This post has a list of 10 editors (especially look at Aviary). I’ve also found Sumo paint.

I really like Illustrator as well but I don’t think we should use it for the same reasons we use Photoshop. Illustrator is my go to when I’m actually ready to publish or for creating graphics that should scale and typography.

For things like that I would end up using both, Photoshop and Illustrator.

Oh wow, sir. How can you create with such disgusting software? But really, I think using just one sort of limits your abilities as a designer. I would go with both PS and Illustrator.

PS and Illustrator are your best friends if you want to make pretty buttons like those. Pair it with a wacom tablet and a few months subscription to Lynda.com. If you’re a student there’s discounts.
