I’ve been making my websites as wide as 960px… it seems to be the best value for websites
is it bad if I added a few hundred… make my life easier on a certain website I’m making….
960px is a reasonable number but you have to be aware that a website designed for, say, 1280px wide might not display the way you would want if viewed on a smaller monitor.
+1 on what andy said, although i dont use the 1140px grid system myself.
right now i prefer Initializr. it forces me to think “mobile first” as the base css styles are mobile and the baked in media query sizes go up from there.
before responsive design became a thing, i used to aim to make all the content fit within 960px with the background elements extending out to 1440-1280px.
