Make an editable text box

I was wondering how I would go about making a area of text that is updated through a page in the dashboard under custom theme options. I have seen it down in other themes and when I went to the source code to copy an dpaste code from it. I wasn’t sure what code I needed and IT didn’t work. Does anybody know how to do this?

wordpress has a text box widget already. You don’t need to get the code. It’s in the widget section
