    I was wondering if its possible right now for moz an webkit browsers to make a linear gradient from a color to nothing, or to 100% opacity. I this possible without using an image?

    Yes, it can be done.

    div{
    background: -moz-linear-gradient(100% 100% 180deg, #999, rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.15)) repeat left top;
    }
