Hi, I’ve seen various sites that have tabbed category previews on their front page. Basically, it looks like a tabbed widget except that it’s on the front page (not in widget section). They have 5 posts with thumbnails per category.

A more sophisticated example would be at this site: http://culture360.org/
Other than editing CSS, I’m pretty new to editing php or using javascripts. Is there a plugin or some way that I could set this up for my blog’s homepage (a hybrid news modification)?
