UI Designers make the Interface of a website as you probably know, so a good understanding of what the latest ‘fashion’ of a website is good to know.

Consists of a lot of converting PSD to HTML/XHTML kinda thing.
If you’re familiar in the areas of HTML, CSS, Javascript, Jquery etc and you have a good view on how to make a website look good then you should be fine.

    Hope I helped.

Strongly disagree: “so a good understanding of what the latest fashion of a website is good to know.”
