How does CSS-Tricks display PHP snippets?

I want to display PHP snippets similar to the way they show up on this page.

In WordPress, I have been using <pre></pre> and <code></code> tags, but
– the lines of code are long and the window does not scroll
– WordPress moves the tags around when I view the page on the front end (auto formatting)

I would be glad to embed it, for example, using CodePen, but the tab says “HTML” and it’s a PHP script.
