I want to sort my projects in different categories, and show these categories on the site.

I would also like to have more categories in the future, and be able to sort the project in e.g. alphebetically, size, year etc. But i need to get it to work first, and now i am stuck.
Do i need to create custom taxonomies, or how do i start?
