Your background image is 1000px wide BUT that includes some transparent area so it won’t kinda cover the whole ‘blog’ area with white.

Also padding has been added to #main which will widen the whole box over 1000px unless you change the box sizing model.

I’m sort of getting the impression that this was a 960px site that has been ‘tweaked’

I just looked at the image via Web Inspector. Perhaps it’s not transparent, perhaps that’s the shadow?
