You put us in an awkward situation; without knowing the requirements of your assignment, its difficult for us to offer assistance without knowing if we’re helping you by breaking the rules. For example, if you’re assignment is to research how to achieve the layout in your image (as I suspect it is) we can’t very well give you specifics and tell you how to do it. That would be defeating the point of your learning exercise.

My advice, as I’m sure others would also suggest, is to research modern web layouts in CSS. This is a good website to get you started http://learnlayout.com
