As sad as this is… it’s kind of true. Now… I do not blame Linux. It’s ALWAYS my mistake for not knowing everything that I need to know.

Be that as it may… when you get your system running and you get it tweaked just the way you like it… Ahhhh what a feeling.

Also, there were many many many things I didn’t understand until reading the Arch wiki a few times. I’ve used many distros that kept the training wheels on and I was like “What’s the point of this? If I wanted something easy to use, I’d go buy a Mac.”

Doesn’t it kinda defeat the purpose, having both copies on the same physical drive?

You know to be honest, I don’t totally know. I thought LVM was capable of mirroring and creating virtual copies, but not actual physical copies. The ONLY reason I want LVM or ZFS or BTRFS is for the ability to resize partitions on the fly. I have no idea how much storage I’ll need for certain this… so I’d like the ability to edit it later. RAID 1 is just smart in my opinion.

Edit: Oh I see what you’re saying. No, I wouldn’t use the mirroring/RAID 1 on the same physical drive. LVM for dynamic resizing of partitions and a COMPLETELY separate disk or disks to automatically back everything up to. I have a drive cage with 8 slots now. Gotta fill em up!

    LVM for dynamic resizing

Oh and snapshots would be nice too. It’s like Git for your file system. Can you think of anything better than that?

Guys, I don’t think I’ll be at peace if I buy any other keyboard than the Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro 2. If I buy ANY other keyboard, I’ll know its a waste of money because I know I’ll eventually buy the HHKB. There, I said it.

Should I go white or black?

My entire system is pretty much black… intentionally so. Black monitors, black case, black cables, black mobo, black video card, etc. So, I guess the black would look better aesthetically. However, something about the white makes me drool. I have a very visceral response to it. I WANT to type when I look at photos of it. The black one doesn’t really have the same effect. But the white makes me really want to just start banging away on those keys.

I have some white and light gray on my system. There’s also some light brushed aluminum. Maybe I can just have the keyboard as sort of an accent piece? At the end of the day… it’s a tool and if that tool motivates me by just looking at it… who cares if it matches right?

*Edit: I’ll probably be getting the non-printed keycaps. So… don’t worry about how visible the letters are.

    Look at this white non-printed:

    Damn that’s hot.

All right, I thought you were only getting the one drive.

I’m only have the one SSD. I’m going to partition grub, boot and root on that. Home will probably be on an HDD. Then I’ll run RAID 1 that backs up to another drive. So, I’m thinking two 1 TB seagates.

But you haven’t address the most pressing issue: Black or white? Which would you choose?

White is the more striking keyboard, but I would probably go with black.

Now that you’ve confirmed that… I’m probably gonna get the white. It’s so badass.

On another note, everyone on the Arch sub kept telling me not to use btrfs for the root partition. I didn’t really get it. Now I do. Apparently, that’s what keeps you from being able to hibernate. You can keep root as ext4 and you can even convert the rest of your ext4 to btrfs.

My newest addition to this project will be custom cable sleeving. This looks awesome:

I’m definitely partial to the paracord. Looks amazing.

In case anyone is curious… my build is uhh… let’s say it’s going slow. I ordered and received all my parts, only to realize I wanted different stuff. I’ve returned pretty much everything except my SSD, my Case, my monitors and my CPU. Here is the list of parts:

Case: Fractal Design Define R4 in Black Pearl w/ Window
CPU: AMD FX 6300 Black Edition
    Mobo: ASUS M5A99FX Pro R2.0
    GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 750
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Dual Channel 8GB (Low Profile)
    SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
Cooler: Corsair H90 (140 mm closed loop liquid cooler)
    Fans: Corsair AF 140 x 6 (3 intakes and 3 exhausts)
    PSU: Corsair AX760 (Fully modular)
    Monitors: Acer H236HL 23″ x 2

I think this build is a REALLY good value all around. Sure… it’s eaten up HOURS of my life but hey… it’s fun. Anyway, I think this will allow me to be much more productive, save money long-term on computing and have one of the most epic /r/unixporn submissions ever.

I think this build will also help me have more fun with JS. Sometimes when I browse Codepen… it’s like INSTANT fan burst. I think that a more badass and dedicated graphics card will help this situation.

No the card above IS the one I’ll be getting. I had a GTX 650 but for the same price, I prefer ALL black, a display port out, and a full size HDMI. The 650 has a mini HDMI. Plus, it’s uglier.

This one will also allow me to do a little gaming a video work if I so choose.

If anyone is curious, this build is ongoing because I got the case-modding bug. I’ll be hitting the inside of my case with some white Plasti Dip.
