So far, I’ve always had them purchase a web hosting account (going over different options like green or local hosts, and guiding them away from godaddy as much as possible) on their own and then giving me the login credentials. That way they are responsible for renewing when it expires, etc. I’ve seen some hosts offer discounts or credit or what have you to developers who get their clients to sign up for web hosting through the developer on their site. Anyone have any strong opinions about this?

Do you mean affiliate program? Which just involves the client using the special link to sign up and you get credit on your hosting plan. No benefit to the client.

    Or

Do you mean Hosting Re-seller? Where you’re actually re-selling hosting plans.

Either way, I would stay away from hosting. Guide your clients and help them make a sound decision about hosting but don’t manage anything for them, especially things like email. Don’t bite off too much. You have to think about the time investment it takes to do support for clients if things go wrong (and they will). They’ll call you the moment something goes down. How much time can you take away from your daily work activities to fix server issues….?

Imagine, over the course of couple of years, about 20+ clients. At this point, you’re no longer developer, you’re hosting support specialist.
