DOCTYPE validation error

Totally stumped here. I was attempting to validate a site that uses the XHTML 1.0 Strict DTD and the result was this: [img]http://eddiegiese.net/validation-wtf.png[/img]

This doesn’t make any sense to me, because the DTD tag is present (view source is the bottom of the image). What could possibly cause this?

If it’s any help, I’m including the DTD, and head with a header.php file.

Looks like there are a couple spaces before the "<!" begins. Remove those spaces, see what happens.

That was my first attempt to fix it. There were no spaces (or empty lines for that matter) prior to the DTD tag. No luck, but thanks for the suggestion.
