I’ve been working with a group of related websites. They mostly get the same traffic except for one that is forwarded to a subdomain, which seems to get 1/2 the other sites traffic. This was originally done to save hosting to the client, and I didn’t change this setup when I took over the project.
The URI itself isn’t going to affect your traffic rates, but a non-semantic, overly long, or complicated address (http://www.my-free-web-host.com/johnsmith) doesn’t have the same professional ring to it as a direct domain address does (http://www.johnsmith.com). Therefore it might be plausible that fewer people are clicking on your link due to doubt about whether you are a ‘proper’ company or not.
