Design ideas with a difficult color system

I’m doing a project for school where I have to create a website for my aunt who is an artist that wants to show her portfolio online . She has told me that she likes these color systems:

Color System A (for the majority of the site)
Color System B (possibly the darker colors for the background)

She wants to use these to create a dark website.

I have a reasonable understanding of HTML and CSS and am attempting to begin to learn enough jQuery and PHP to pull off a good site.

Me and my client have agreed that this layout (dimensions could be different):

I have tried but I feel as though these colors could be difficult to use together to create a website that is aesthetically pleasing and still usable.

Absolutely ANY thoughts would be very helpful.

Don’t do a dark background unless you’re confident that the images she has on her site are bright enough to contrast well with it.

Although not exactly the same as the second colour scheme, http://www.iconspedia.com/ shows that you can use the darker colours to make certain bits stand out in a lighter design
