css3 gradient transparencies

hello I have been able to make the gradient using css3 techniques and i was wondering if there is a way to possibly make it transparent so i could have the background show through slightly. I only want to have the background be an image, not the sidebar.
also is there a way to extend the side bar to the bottom without having content in it or non breaking spaces?
