Css image hover

Can anyone help me .. to figure out how to make some tricks with image hover… i want to make the image to become bigger. I’ve tried with image hover ;) but the only thing that i can do ;) is to make them bigger but to from top to the bottom .. If i add position:relative in my css my images from the html .. have some delay 1 , 2 sec until they become bigger in the way that i choose.
