CSS Color Animation applied to background?

Hi there!
I saw the article on the animated CSS colour background and wondered if this idea has been extended further to actually provide this effect for the background to a web page.

I predominantly use WordPress for my websites, but would love to provide this sort of effect as a shimmering background. I have played aorund with oyur code but seem to be missing something about applying the effect to the background image itself and not an element within the body of the page?

You can animate background-color but you can’t animate a background-image with CSS transitions as background-image is not based on a number.
