    Hi friends.

I’ve been pulling my hair out the last couple of days trying to figure out what may be causing this:

    http://www.webpagetest.org/result/160107_YZ_11P8/

Every once in a while I’ll have a connection hang for 5-10 seconds, even more sometimes, before content starts downloading for a given asset. Sometimes it gets stuck on initial connection, sometimes on time to first byte.

This wasn’t an issue previously and I haven’t recently installed any plugins (this is on a WP site), so I have no idea what could be causing it. The site is hosted through Media Temple who insists it’s not a server-related issue. To make matters more confusing, MT offers a staging site service and on the staging sites all of my problems magically go away (here’s a test on a staging site showing load times 5+ seconds faster: http://www.webpagetest.org/result/160107_PA_11PB/ ).

Has anyone experienced anything like this? I know this is sort of a broad question but I’m not even sure how to narrow things down… I can’t imagine it’s DNS-related (since DNS lookup seems fast), and the only difference in .htaccess between the two sites is forcing TLS on the live site (we’ve had TLS in place for a while and everything was fine).

edit: Even second visit load times are just abysmal on our live site, and pretty much every asset has cache headers set. Whaaaaat is happening :(

So…. quick update, apparently it’s related to SSL.

I stopped forcing ssl and loaded everything over an unsecure connection and got the speeds I was expecting. When loading over ssl however it was right back to where it was…

Currently chatting up MT support to see if they changed anything that might have caused this to happen :/
